Three of the largest websites on the Web are coming together to make a collaborated effort against mass surveillance reports the Guardian.   Reddit, Imgur and BoingBoing have come together for a campaign called “Reset The Net”, kicking off on June 5, to protest against the mass surveillance of online activities by security agencies such as the NSA.   Companies are planning to show a splash screen to all users who log on to the websites on the day, similar to the one used in the protest against SOPA, the US copyright bill. This time they plan to empower their users by encouraging them to use and install privacy and encryption tools for better protection against email spying and the likes. Other sites have also joined forces, by pledging to improve security and privacy settings of their own sites, by enabling standards such as HTTPS, the most widely used encryption standard on the Web.   The report quoted Reddit’s General Manager Erik Martin saying, “We can take back control of our personal and private data one website, one device, one internet user at a time. We’re proud to stand up for our users’ rights and help ‘Reset the Net’.”   The campaign is being co-ordinated by Fight for the Future whose co-founder Tiffiny Cheng was quoted as saying, “Now that we know how mass surveillance works; we know how to stop it. That’s why people all over the world are going to work together to use encryption everywhere and make it too hard for any government to conduct mass surveillance.   “There are moments in history where people and organisations must choose whether to stand on the side of freedom or tyranny. On June 5th, the internet will show which side it’s on.”
