Qualcomm will provide Samsung with an updated version of Snapdragon 810 chip for their much anticipated Galaxy S6. This comes just days after Samsung **announced** that it would not be using Snapdragon 810 chips due to over heating issues and would rather opt for their own. LG had recently said they encountered **no overheating problems** with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon processor that is powering the company’s G Flex 2 smartphone. According to a report by Wall Street Journal, Qualcomm is expected to provide Samsung with a new version of the Snapdragon chip in March. However, it’s not clear whether the new chip will arrive in time for the Samsung Galaxy S6. If not, the company will continue to use their own Exynos chipsets in the phone. Samsung has earlier used their Exynos processor for certain devices but preferred using Qualcomm in markets like the US because of it’s ability to integrate LTE modems with its application processors. The report further stated that the Snapdragon 810 is a key part of Qualcomm’s sales plans for 2015 as these chips are going to power some high-end smartphones for several companies. At CES, Qualcomm President Derek Aberle said it has “good traction” with handset makers. As Samsung is one of the major companies which opts for Qualcomm chips for most of its devices, it seems like Qualcomm plans to redesign the chips and work on the issue of over-heating to have a solution in time for the release of the new flagship smartphone. Earlier **reports** suggest that Qualcomm could face a record fine of $1 billion in China for overcharging and abusing its market position in wireless communication standards. Charging royalties based on the cellphones’ selling prices, even those made with competitors’ chips, provided more than half of its $8 billion (roughly Rs. 50,600 crores) net income last year.
