With both Sony and Microsoft having unveiled their next-gen consoles – the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One respectively – the question that remains in everyone’s minds is the pricing of the consoles. According to executives of game retail chain Gamestop, both the consoles will supposedly cost less than their predecessors.

According to Gamestop’s Chief Financial Officer Robert Lloyd, both Microsoft and Sony will be opting for a “lower opening price point than they did last cycle”. This was part of the market model based on Gamestop’s estimates as well as what the company has been told by Microsoft and Sony. Another part of the market model mentions that not as many people will buy the next-gen consoles this time. The model states that the adoption rate for the PS4 and the Xbox One will be between 80 to 85 percent of the previous-gen consoles.

The Xbox One might end up being cheaper than the 360

The Xbox 360 had made its debut at the $399 (approximately Rs 22,192) price point in the US. The PlayStation 3 was much more expensive at the time. The 20GB model was launched for $499 (approximately Rs 27,754), and the 60GB model for $599 (approximately Rs 33,364). Pricing the next-gen consoles below this wouldn’t be a bad thing for the consumers, but whether or not the companies will be able to sustain the losses from selling consoles is the key question.

More information about both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One will be revealed at this year’s E3. We will also probably get to see some more games for both consoles, and Sony might even finally show us what the PlayStation 4 actually looks like!

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
