How far would you go for your love? Well, if someone were to ask that to a certain programmer James Laird, he’d say that he could hack Apple’s private key for streaming iTunes music on any compatible device.
This is how he did it..
And, he did just that. Apparently, to help his girlfriend stream iTunes music in her new house, he hacked away Apple’s private key. Only he didn’t let it remain a private affair. He made it an open source project, titled Shairport, using which it’s possible to receive AirTunes music from iTunes.
The trick here is the public-key encryption scheme that Apple employs for AirTunes streaming. However, iTunes streams music solely on Apple devices. But, this mode for one seems to be in danger with the Shairport coming to existence. All Laird did was literally break open AirTunes Express, dumped the ROM into it and hunted for the private key. The key, which apparently was hidden in the ROM image was used to crack open the crypto.
Surprisingly, the final effect looks just like the actual software and one can’t actually differentiate one from the other. We’re surprised but, do not try this at home, is what we’d say.
