Somebody asked the Internet, how badly do you want to see a man make potato salad? The answer, a bit obvious, is very badly. We can all agree that the online world is weird, but a Kickstarter project for a potato salad is quite possibly ‘winning the Internet.’ Ohio-based Zack Danger Brown (that’s an awesome middle name) has started a project on the crowd-funding platform hoping to raise a humble $10 so he could make a potato salad. “Basically I’m just making potato salad. I haven’t decided what kind yet.” his Kickstarter page reads. With that brief alone, he would have easily won a little more than $10, but the Internet loves a challenge and it’s as if someone asked how much can we raise for a potato salad, because at the time of writing, Brown had raised over $34,500 from over 3,100 backers. In case you are wondering, you haven’t missed out on the boat to join in on the fun as the campaign has 25 days remaining. At its current funding level, it has raised nearly 3500 times the amount it sought to at the outset, making it by far the most successful Kickstarter campaign ever. It manages to ‘out-fund’ in pure percentage terms Pebble smartwatch, Ouya gaming console, the Veronica Mars movie and a slew other high-profile successful campaigns. Now you might wonder how Kickstarter has even allowed such a innocuous project to start. That’s because the company changed its rules last month, to allow anyone to start **a campaign without prior approval** . It just required that the project create or build something that can be shared with others, and that it’s honest and clearly presented. Brown has succeeded on both counts. For those curious, the man has a long list of perks of backers. For $1, Brown says, “With your help, we’ll be on our way to a successful potato salad. You will get a ’thank you’ posted to our website and I will say your name out loud while making the potato salad.” For $3, he will send you bite of the potato salad and a photo of him making the potato salad, along with all the perks of lower rungs. At the top tier, you can pledge $70 for the ‘POTATO SALADS OF THE WORLD’ perk. With this you would receive a recipe book with potato salad recipes inspired by each country where the project has a backer. The recipe book will have a dedication page with the name of each backer. Now time to brace yourself for the onslaught of weird campaigns.
