PlayStation 4 to support cross-platform chat with PlayStation Vita

As we get ever-closer to the release date of the PlayStation 4, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida reveals more neat features that have the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita working in unison to provide a better experience overall. More recently, Yoshida has revealed that the chat features, including the much-loved party chat, will work cross-platform between the PS4 and the PS Vita.

Yoshida was asked by a gamer that, “if I have a friend playing vita, can I invite him into my party chat on PS4 cross platform chat?” Yoshida replied simply with a “yes”.

Great synergy with the PlayStation 4

Another big feature that works between the two gaming devices is remote play, which is essentially having the ability to play your PS4 games on the PS Vita. It works by downscaling the 1080p framebuffer to the Vita’s 960 x 544 resolution. It uses the PS4’s built-in h.264 encoder hardware to compress the image, which is then sent to the Vita over Wi-Fi. The Vita decodes the video and sends controller input back to the PS4. This back-and-forth allows anyone to play PS4 games on a Vita as long as they’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

This has the potential to give new life to the PlayStation Vita. The handheld gaming system hasn’t seen a lot of commercial success since its launch, despite its competitor – the Nintendo 3DS – making a hefty profit.

Not only has the Vita failed to attract customers, but developers also seem to steer clear of the device. That isn’t to say the handheld system doesn’t have any high profile games. Ubisoft had released Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation for the Vita alongside the launch of Assassin’s Creed 3. Activision had also released its own game – Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified, but that was critically panned.

The PlayStation 4 is hitting stores some time in November.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
