 "PlayStation 4 is a gaming console 'first and foremost', says Sony boss")
With all the controversy surrounding the next-gen consoles – namely Microsoft’s Xbox One – Sony seems to be playing it smart so far with its PR for the PlayStation 4. According to The Verge, Sony boss Kazuo Hirai has said that for the PlayStation 4, gaming comes first.
At the D11 conference, Hirai said, “The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers.” He continued, “If we miss that part, I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3.”
First and foremost a gaming console
This doesn’t mean that the PlayStation 4 won’t have any non-gaming functionality, though. Hirai has said that the company will be revealing more non-gaming related functionality of the PS4 later. “Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it’s first and foremost a video game console.” Sony is bound to unveil more information about the PS4 at the upcoming E3.
Just a couple of days ago, it was revealed that Sony has made it mandatory for PS4 game developers to include remote play capability with the PlayStation Vita. This, for obvious reasons, excludes games that need the bundled PS4 Eye stereosopic camera.
Remote Play is essentially having the ability to play your PS4 games on the PS Vita. It works by downscaling the 1080p framebuffer to the Vita’s 960 x 544 resolution. It uses the PS4’s built-in h.264 encoder hardware to compress the image, which is then sent to the Vita over Wi-Fi. The Vita decodes the video and sends controller input back to the PS4. This back-and-forth allows anyone to play PS4 games on a Vita as long as they’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
The PlayStation 4 is expected to hit stores by the end of the year.
