The current generation of consoles seems to have been an unprecedented success. According to Eurogamer, Sony has announced that it has sold 80 million PlayStation 3 units. The sales figure counts all PS3s sold since its Japan-only launch on November 11, 2006 to November 2, 2013. This makes the console just a few days shy of seven years old.
The company also talked about some of the third party support that the PlayStation 3 got throughout its life as well as the whopping 4,332 games having been released for it worldwide. It is worth noting that this doesn’t count download-only games. The company also pointed out that Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us sold 3.4 million copies in its first few weeks, and praised the critically-acclaimed game Journey by thatgamecompany.
I still think the original PS3 looks like the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey
Sony isn’t completely done with the PlayStation 3 just yet, however. The company has stated that more than 300 games will be making it to the console from third-party developers as well as Sony’s own in-house studios from the beginning of November to the end of December in various regions. This, of course, includes the flagship racing title Gran Turismo 6.
PlayStation Network got some mention as well, having achieved more than 150 million registered accounts as of September 19 this year. The amount of digital content on PSN surpasses the 2,22,000 count, out of which 72,000 is game content, which includes full game downloads, indie titles and DLC.
The company is gearing up for the launch of the PlayStation 4 this month in North America and Europe. The console will be making it to Japan in early 2014, but there has been no mention of an Indian release date yet.
