Sony Online Entertainment seems to be paying close attention to what Valve has been doing with Steam Workshop. The company has now launched the Player Studio—a service which allows players to make their own in-game items for massively multiplayer shooter PlanetSide 2 and sell them. Other games that have already gotten the Player Studio service are EverQuest, EverQuest 2 and Free Realms.
Players can start off by downloading sample geometry files which can be used as templates for items like decals, hood ornaments and helmets. These files can be imported into advanced software like Maya or Photoshop. User-created items have to get past SOE’s approval process. On sale of an item, the original creator gets 40 percent of the cut.

Currently, the service is only available to those who play on the US-based servers, but eventually, it will be rolled out to the rest of the world. According to the PlanetSide 2 website , selected items will be offered for sale in the SOE Marketplace along with items created by staff artists, priced in SOE’s Station Cash virtual currency.
PlanetSide 2 is a free-to-play game that is currently available for PCs through the official website or digital distribution platform Steam . Back in June, we learned that with another free-to-play SOE game—DC Universe Online—PlanetSide 2 will also be making its way to the PlayStation 4 . The game won’t require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online.
While most multiplayer shooters are based on a match-making or server system, what sets PlanetSide 2 apart is the game’s single persistent world. This means that things will continue to happen even when you aren’t playing, and the next time you play, you could be logging-in to a radically different world with completely different borders.
