A new technology developed by scientists at the RMIT Institute, Melbourne and Australian National University will now make your portable electronics self-reliant, at least as far as their power (charging) is concerned. According to the latest findings by the researchers, which have found themselves a place in the 21st June issue of the popular material science journal, Advanced Functional Materials; piezoelectric will be, or rather is already proving to be a path breaking innovation.
The touch effect!
The research team, consisting of Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran (co-author), Dr. Sharath Sriram (co-author), Prof. Arnan Mitchell (Head), in collaboration with Dr. Simon Ruffell from the Australian National University identified the potential; piezoelectrics and thin film technology possessed. The team added that a simple execution of the concept would be its inclusion in running shoes to charge mobile phones.
Piezoelectric or the science of conversion of pressure into electrical energy has already found its applications in several daily life gadgets, the most common one being the mobile phone. Among other applications of the technology are charging a laptop during the typing process, or charging a pace maker using the power that blood pressure generates.
