HTC is apparently readying the One X 5, a smartphone featuring a large display. A photo of the HTC One X 5 has surfaced in an image that is believed to be a press shot. This year we have witnessed the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the LG Optimus Vu smartphones. Both devices have above average screen sizes. From the looks of it, it appears that HTC too is jumping onto the phablet bandwagon.

According to Jon Fingas, an author at Engadget, he states, “A Sina Weibo user has posted what we have reason to believe is an authentic press image of the finished result: meet the One X 5. As the name and image suggest, the phablet-class device should be dominated by a 5-inch (and possibly 1080p) screen that makes even a regular One X look dainty. Internal details haven’t been nailed down alongside the looks, although previous benchmarks have had it using a Snapdragon S4 that might ultimately be a quad-core S4 Pro. There’s no immediate signs of a stylus or other tricks besides that sea of glass.”

HTC One X 5 captured in a press shot?

Is this the HTC One X 5?

The website then quickly issued an update, which stated that this could be a concept image and for now, should be taken with a pinch of salt.

This is not the first time we have heard of such a device being in the works and an earlier report showed a similar looking handset being captured in the wild and it too possessed a display that appears to be roughly 5 inches. A report by The Verge had stated that this could be the HTC6435LVW which appeared on a benchmarking site earlier on and the handset sported a 1.5GHz processor that outperformed a traditional Qualcomm S4 by a wide enough margin to make some wonder whether it might be based on a next-gen chip. The handset also had a display with 1794 x 1080 screen resolution, which could probably be rounded up to full 1080p if you assume the difference is HTC’s original implementation of the menu button on Android v4.0.

HTC will be hosting a media event on September 19, and there is good chance that this device may be showcased. The invitation for the press event gives no details about what HTC will announce.

It can be speculated that the phone HTC may be announcing will be the HTC 8X, formerly known as the HTC accord. Recently, the phone’s manual was leaked and showed that the phone’s name will be HTC 8X. The leak of the manual also gives other information such as the position of the volume rocker and other external hardware features of the phone.

The phone seems to be running Windows 7.x in the pictures that were leaked a few days ago on Twitter, but there are speculations that the screenshot is of a much earlier render. The HTC Accord was first seen in June, along with two other phones, Zenith and Rio. The Accord is the middle child of the trio, with a screen size of 4.3 inches and a 720p Super LCD 2 display. Also onboard are a 1080p-capable 8MP camera sensor, 42Mbps HSPA+, NFC support and a whole gig of RAM. It is also rumoured that it may come with a MSM8260A SoC onboard.
