Phishing attacks increased by 87 percent across the world: Kaspersky

New Delhi: About 10,000 Internet users in India face phishing attacks from cybercriminals daily, says a report by security solutions provider Kaspersky. Phishing is a form of Internet fraud in which criminals create a fake copy of a popular site (an email service, a banking website, a social networking site) and try to lure the users to these rogue web pages. The unsuspecting user enters their login information.

According to the report, the world on an average saw 1.02 lakh phishing attacks everyday last year. “In 2012-2013, 102,100 users around the world were subjected to phishing attacks on a daily basis. In Russia, 19,000 users were attacked each day, 12,000 in the US, 10,000 in India, 6,000 in Germany, 3,000 in France, and another 3,000 in the UK,” the report said. These numbers were much lower in 2011-12. Over the period, about 52,000 users globally were subjected to phishing attacks daily.

“Overall, the volume and intensity of phishing attacks has more than doubled over the past two years,” it said. In 2012-2013, 37.3 million users around the world were subjected to phishing attacks, up 87 percent from 2011-2012.

“Most often, phishing attacks targeted users in Russia, the US, India, Vietnam and the UK. Phishing attacks were most frequently launched from the US, the UK, Germany, Russia and India,” the report revealed. Yahoo, Google, Facebook and Amazon are top targets of malicious users. Online game services, online payment systems, and the websites of banks and other credit and financial organisations are also common targets, it added.

Over 20 percent of all attacks targeted banks and other credit and financial organizations, Kaspersky said in its report. During the survey, Kaspersky Lab specialists compared data on phishing attacks from over 50 million Kaspersky Security Network users between 1 May 2012 and 30 April 2013 with figures for the equivalent period of 2011-2012.
