Periscope, Twitter-owned social live-streaming service turned a year old on Monday. And, it has decided to celebrate the big day by disclosing its usage numbers for Android and iOS platforms. Periscope says it has hit 200 million live broadcasts since its launch in March 2015, out of which 100 million were achieved since January 2016. That’s almost double the number since January. It should be noted that it was in January that Twitter decided on a Periscope integration. The company further said that Periscope users watch 110 years or about 1 million hours of live streams everyday. Periscope was acquired by Twitter early last year for $100 million. One of its biggest competitor at that time was Meerkat. In fact, it was Meerkat that compelled Twitter to buy Periscope. It later cut off from Meerkat totally, for obvious reasons. This also led to rumours such as Facebook buying Meerkat to take on Twitter. While that didn’t happen, the social media giant did go ahead and introduce Facebook Live. Live streaming is slowly catching up and definitely makes Periscope a success story, so far. In fact, the competition has now made Meerkat turn away from live streaming and it has turned into a video sharing social network. However, there is some stiff competition ahead with Facebook and Google working on their respective live streaming services. Yes, recently Google was also known to be working on its periscope-competitor called YouTube Connect .
