Pebble smartwatch users who are currently running on iOS 6 now have a good reason to perk up. While the iOS 7 update for the wearable device is still in the works, the company behind the watch has now issued an update for its iOS app to support email alerts.
Pebble was initially a Kickstarter project that successfully got funding in 2012. The wearable device comes with a variety of customisable functions, like vibrating notifications, messages and alerts. The $150 (Rs 9060 approx) device, up for pre-order on the Pebble website and available on Best Buy, was able to generate $10.2 million in funding during its campaign.
Pebble helps alert users when they have an incoming call, which comes with caller ID, SMS support for both Android and iPhone devices, calendar alert, Facebook messages, Tweets, Weather alerts as well as a silent vibrating alarm and timer. For iOS users, the device also supports iMessage, and now, email notifications.
Pebble smartwatch users now have email alerts for their iOS app
The iOS app update will allow the device to support Gmail via a login through Google while other IMAP email accounts are supported via a login-system within the app. Users can set up multiple accounts at the same time, The update does not support non-IMAP accounts (like POP), though.
The company has also considered users who may receive a lot of emails. The update will give Pebble users the option to temporarily pause email notifications. It should be noted, though, that email notifications as applied to Pebble Smartwatch are not, technically, push notifications. In case of the wearable device, the app will employ a fetch system where it will check for new emails every 15 minutes and send any new email notifications to the device.
The new free version of the Pebble smartwatch app is now available in the Apple App store. The company has said that the app is optimised for the iPhone and the iPhone Touch which run iOS 5.0 or later versions. It should be noted that the new app requires Pebble users to update their iOS app to version 1.2 in order to set up the email alerts feature.
