Pebble has sold over a million watches, with half of them sold in last 9 months

In an interview with TheVerge, CEO Eric Migicovsky revealed that the company has achieved a milestone by selling its one billionth Pebble on December 31.

While Apple, Samsung and Google are striving to push their smart watches in the market, the Pebble smartwatch that has been around for sometime has surpassed the "one" million figure. In an interview with TheVerge, CEO Eric Migicovsky revealed that the company has achieved a milestone by selling its one millionth Pebble on December 31.

Interestingly, this number is two times of what it sold in March. This means, the company managed to sell half a million smart watches in nine months, after adding some new features and a price cut.

Migicovsky told the news site that Pebble plans to carry its momentum through 2015 with new products and a new software platform, something not seen in smartwatches, so far.  Though Pebble will continue to support apps, the company is reportedly working on a new software that will become the main focus of the platform.

However, the upcoming year could be a big challenge for Pebble as Apple is all set launch its smartwatch. So far, its biggest competitors seem to be the Android Wear-based watches and also watches from Sony and Samsung.

"Pebble has had a lot of success garnering support from third-party developers, with activity doubling since September. The company launched a web-based emulator just this month, which lets developers build and test apps without having to install any software on their computers. There are now 6,000 apps and watchfaces on the current platform, and Pebble says it has nearly 25,000 developers contributing worldwide," adds the report.

Last year in January, the company had announced a new version of Pebble. The plastic-built first version set the standard for crowd-sourced devices with a funding of $10 million. Unlike the original model, the new Pebble was built of stainless steel. It was available in matte black and brushed steel for $249 (approximately Rs 15,450).
