Is Samsung working on a wraparound display for its next device? If the images of patent filed by company that have surfaced are true, then we might see a device with display similar to three sides Youm display.

According to Galaxy Club , the Samsung has filed a patent for a device display that will fold round the bends and stop just short of it back. The patent also shows function keys that are situated on the sides.

The site further says that it should not be presumed that Samsung will come out with such a device any time soon. The design in the patent is only a concept device and is the case filing patents does not mean that it will actually happen. However, there’s some speculation that we will see this design in the Galaxy Note 4, expected later this year. Samsung had told Reuters in a long interview earlier this month about a new form factor for the Note 4 . This is possibly what the company meant.

The display in the patent seems to be inspired by the Youm display showcased by Samsung at CES 2013 . The Youm screen curves beyond the edge of display. The technology behind the display actually expanded the canvas available for content and also showed how content flowed along the sides of the device.

A major benefit of such a screen would be freeing up the main display area by putting icons on the side. For example, notification button on the side could mean more uninterrupted viewing space. So any time a notification pops up it won’t interfere with whatever task the user is doing on the front screen.

As of now it is difficult to see Samsung implementing the wraparound display for Galaxy Note 4, as there’s no indication that Samsung has it ready for mass production. We could also see the new form factor for the Galaxy Round 2, if that ever makes it to retail.  But with Apple iPhone 6 rumoured to be coming with a curved display , it is possible that Samsung has a wraparound display ready for new devices.
