Paranoid Android custom ROM project makes a comeback

If you are familiar with the world of custom ROMs for Android then you would definitely remember Paranoid Android. The team behind the project not only developed custom ROMs but also worked on a bunch of interesting features that went on to become a common sight for a variety of customs ROMs, even Cyanogen. The popular custom ROM project made news back in February 2015 when it lost most of its important developers to OnePlus, who had hired them to develop its own ROM, Oxygen OS. OnePlus was desperate since its tie-up with Cyanogen was taken over by Micromax . The remaining PA team slowed down and released their major release based on Android 5.1, in July 2015. The head at PA project, Matt Flaming had also confirmed the fact that since some of the team’s core members had left, and that Paranoid Android would be on hold. The good news is that the Paranoid Android project is getting a new life thanks to over a dozen new team members. The latest release has taken over nine months and will be loaded with features new and old, including an improved floating window mode, immersive mode, on-the-spot controls for the behaviour of the notification drop-down, a new quick settings re-order mechanism, battery style, an advanced power dialogue, support for Paranoid OTA updates, a theme engine, and support for layers. Devices like the OnePlus and some Oppo smartphones, this release will come with some extra advanced features like an enhanced kernel, advanced gesture control, and support for the alert slider and fingerprint scanner. The new release also focuses on the UI design including new system icons, interaction models, illustrations, and wallpapers designed in-house as well as established names. Currently the new Paranoid Android ROM will be officially supported on the following devices:

  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 7 2013
