One of the things that have to be admired about Apple is the almost myth-like status all their products seem to acquire. The phone has not even been released yet and already companies are beginning to wonder what is going to happen to their bottom line.
The latest to react to the phone phenomenon,is none other than Palm Inc. Palm which manufacturers the well known Treo series of smart phones, has hired Paul Mercer a well known design and software engineer. Paul Mercer is a former Apple employee who has not only worked on V7 of the Macintosh finder but also is the founder of a software firm that established a software system ,that Apple software designers used in the first version of the iPod software. Recently Mercer has also worked with Samsung on the design for the Z5 MP3 player.
What does the presence of Mercer mean for Palm? We are guessing, he has been hired to work on a new OS for their smart phones. Palm has lost a lot of ground to the likes of RIM and Nokia in the last few years and could use a smart new OS that will help them reclaim their lost glory by developing a new OS that has all current features like SVG graphics, inbuilt VoIP and a re-usable interface much like the iPhone.
