Own a Samsung Galaxy? You could get Jay-Z's new album for free

Even while Pink Floyd is tying up with Spotify to release its entire catalogue on the service, rapper Jay-Z has announced that he will be giving away his new album to select Samsung phone owners for free.

According to a deal inked with Samsung, owners of Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 are eligible to receive Jay-Z’s newest album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” for free. All you need to do is download a special app to get hold of the album a whole three days before it officially goes on sale for non-Samsung owners. The catch is that only the first million people who sign up for this will receive the album.

Samsung has already purchased a million copies of the album in advance and will be making it available to its customers on a first-come-first-serve basis. The special app that you need to download Magna Carta Holy Grail will hit Google Play store on June 24 and the album will be available on July 4. The app promises an “unprecedented inside look into the album, personal stories and inspiration”.

Up against the mighty Apple in the US over patent battles, Samsung could well earn a few cookie points with its user base by distributing Magna Carta Holy Grail for free. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Korean Giant paid $5 for each of the million copies of the album, while The New York Post estimates that the deal runs into “eight figures”, worth as much as $20 million. CNET writes that this could make Magna Carta Holy Grail probably the first album to go platinum weeks before the album’s release.

With device manufacturers and services joining hands with musicians in a battle to gain attention, it’s the music aficionados who stand to gain a lot. These are good times to be a music lover.
