Our pick: 10 funny web comics for your rainy day blues

Web comics are quickly becoming a major source of amusement or irritation for the Internet user. Big or small, main stream or offbeat, these one-off panels promise to tickle your funny bone, and mostly keep up to that promise. With a dry, slapstick or down-right random lookout at life, you won’t find the Bold and the Beautiful-ish drama being featured here. Here’s a look at the funniest web comics that should definitely be on every Internet user’s reading list.

For the Grammar Nazi:

Xkcd
What if you wanted to have a conversation with someone who can match up to your intellect? What if you never found that? What would you do then? For the intellectually inclined web user, xkcd may just be the answer. With panel after panel making fun of the sms-lingo gang, the mathematically challenged mortals and even amateur Grammar Nazi’s, xkcd is a breath of fresh air for web users who like to read intelligent humour, with proper grammar for a change. And xkcd doesn’t stop at that. The comic designer has a good Blag going on where math, sarcasm and grammar fuse to make for a pretty interesting read so far. The web comic has definitely been on our bookmark lists for a while, and we recommend that it be on yours as well.

Grammar Nazi

Cyanide and Happiness may appeal to all the Grammar Nazi’s out there..

Cyanide and Happiness
While this is definitely not-off beat, Cyanide and Happiness has to feature on our list, because it is just so awesome! Cleverly playing on similar sounding words, readers will never ever make the mistake of mixing up infestation and infection again. With simple stick figures conveying the message, the dialogue is the best part of this comic. And if you’re into correcting grammar at every stage of life, you will definitely find kindred sprits in the cartoonists responsible for this comic. And for those of us who have friends who do that, well, Cyanide and Happiness is a good way to polish up on how to correctly use words and get a good joke out of it at the same time.

For the Cynic:

Romantically Apocalyptic
Romance can survive anything, even the Apocalypse! Or so the saying goes, anyway. And with “Romantically Apocalyptic”, you get exactly that. With billboard conversations and Titanic-ish posing over a ruined landscape, this web comic will definitely appeal to those who have a morbid streak in their personality. And for everyone else, as long as you don’t mind death, desolation and skeletons heaped around, the dialogue is sure to crack you up. Or not, but that isn’t something the cartoonist really concern themselves with, what with the apocalypse having come around and all.

5

Romantically Apocalyptic. Need we say more..

Fly, You Fools!
The tagline says it all! “People are cattle” is the corner stone of this web comic. With no drama, no saas-bahu syndromes and definitely no bull shit, “Fly, You Fools!” is a dry look at the problems that life puts us through, and the irritation we may feel while going through it. With the current panel working on marriage, the tone is hilarious, with the pragmatic take that youngsters have on marriage warring with the “eternal love is what gives happiness” thought process. Another title you may want to have a look at is why there are cows on Indian roads, a problem that most Indian Internet users have had to face at some point of time. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!

For the Geek:

Bug Martini
Adam Huber is a pretty famous one if you move in the right circles. And Bug Martini is definitely one that many users subscribe to. Be that as it may, the reason why this comic is on our list is not its popularity, but the brilliant humour you can find! With dry observations on pretty much everything, there is at least one comic panel that will appeal to every reader. With safety tips on how to use rockets and firecrackers balancing out failed attempts at killing people, the random humour has always had many takers.

2

Penny Arcade should definitely appeal to the Gamer in us all…

Penny Arcade
A stalwart must in every gamers reading list, Penny Arcade takes the realm of gaming to a whole other level. With internal wise-cracks galore, the web comic takes a good look at gaming fanatics. So if your life revolves around enemy death machines, care packages, first-person-shooter games and game world engines, you need not look further. And if it doesn’t, you should still have a look, because the humour will definitely get your attention, if not the jargon.

For the Funny:

Stale Bacon
A pop culture parody, this web comic looks at every single part of the American popular culture sphere, and turns it upside down. Talking about PRISM, the 4th of July and the good old American way in the same breath, Stale Bacon does show that there is more to the US than what meets the eye. And all of it can be made fun off.

4

Victorian panels meet humourous dialogue, all thanks to WonderMark…

WonderMark
If you want to travel back in time to the Victorian age, then WonderMark is the web comic to see, more or less. Well, not really. Well, hmmm… with loads of 19th-Century woodcuts and engravings being used, you will see straight-laced characters getting witty, cocky, crazy or down right weird. The contrast between the dialogue and the panels themselves are hilarious, and the author definitely has a vast collection of old books to pick from. And the best part is the build-up, which makes you wait for a serious tone that inevitably turns out to be exactly the opposite.

For the Political:

Indian Political Comics
If you are used to the political humour that most newspapers bring to the Indian scene, then you should definitely check this one out. Indian Poltical Comics now has a Facebook page! With political ideas, statements and orders being taken in a literal sense, political bashers will relish the panels that show ministers being fed to a hungry T-Rex. Featuring all the best known and little loved faces of the Indian political scenario, the comparisons are crisp and the interpretations hilarious. Definitely something to catch up on if you loved the political comics that daily newspapers have been featuring for years now.

3

Matt Bors takes poltical satire to a whole other level with his cartoons…

Editorial Cartoons by Matt Bors
If you want political satire from a Pulitzer Prize finalist, then Matt Bors is the man for you. With the ability to turn the American administration on its head, be ready to deal with sleazy politicians trying their best to do damage control. The entire system is looked at in a matter-of-fact way, with the cartoonist reporting what was said while looking at the humour behind every situation. And the recent panel on the Defense of Marriage Act should definitely crack up a lot of people.

For the Random:

Perry Bible Fellowship
One of the most random ones we could find, PBF has all the potential of making a love story out of two scraps of paper and a piece of rock (no we are not kidding). Everything from the post-apocalyptic mailman to a sadistic Robin Hood can be found here. If you have that bend of mind, you will definitely cackle your way through each panel. And if you see a flying walrus on the web comic, well, don’t question your sanity… much, anyway.

A Flying Walrus.. Really??

A Flying Walrus… Really??

Fatawesome

This web comic definitely needs some looking into. From metaphysical fatherly advice on whether all men are stretched out midgets to a tooth fairy gone wrong, you will never get the expected from this comic. With one-offs that cracked us up to ones that kind of creep-ed us out, web users should definitely look this one up, if they want to just take a break from the unnecessary orderliness that reality has forced us into.
