Smartphone cameras have evolved and improved tremendously over the past few years. While these cameras have now become more versatile, you can comfortably zoom in and capture an object with better details and low level of noise, courtesy of lossless zoom. Of course, the Nokia 808 PureView was the first handset to offer a humongous 41 MP camera sensor, however, smartphone manufacturers in recent past have introduced smartphone cameras with higher resolution at 48 MP.
With leading tech companies Samsung, Huawei, LG springing with latest innovations in the smartphone camera segment, Chinese OEM Oppo joined the bandwagon and showcased the world’s first “5X dual-camera zoom” for smartphones at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2017.
The camera setup offered 5x lossless zoom capability along with effective optical image stabilisation to prevent loss of focus while using longer zoom ranges. Interestingly, Oppo now seems to have opened yet another purview of possibility in smartphone photography. To one’s marvel, the Chinese handset maker is now gearing up to introduce 10x optical zoom camera. As per the media invite spotted by GSMArena, Oppo will unveil the upcoming lossless zoom camera technology on 16 January. The event is scheduled to take place in Beijing, China.
At present, the 5x setup which is basically a 5P lens utilises the dual camera with one wide-angle lens while the other is a telephoto lens. The telephoto lens housed in a periscope-style mechanism has a 90-degree angular prism. The telephoto or the periscope lens is positioned horizontally that gets its light through the prism. The camera module is just 5.7 mm thin and the mechanism also uses OIS (optical image stabilisation) to sharpen images with the telephoto lens.
Besides the date and venue, other details are scarce as of now, however, considering that 5x zoom hasn’t seen a ‘market release’ yet, whether Oppo exhibits a proper smartphone with the upcoming 10x lossless zoom camera technology remains a mystery.
However, in case Oppo brings a full-fledged smartphone incorporating this technology, it could be a potential threat for those Android camera phones with higher megapixels. Previous speculations have suggested that a supposed Oppo device under the moniker F19 Pro might feature a new 10x hybrid optical zoom technology.
