Soon after a Google engineer advised against using OnePlus USB Type-C cable and adapter with the new Nexus devices, OnePlus has put out a statement acknowledging the issue. In a blog post, Carl Pei acknowledged that while the OnePlus Type-C cable and the OnePlus USB Type-C adapter, are safe to use with the OnePlus 2, they may not be completely compatible with third-party devices.
He further goes on to explain that the cable and adapter use a 10kΩ resistor, but according to version 1.1 of the Type-C port standard, they should be using a 56kΩ resistor. "The issue is that the cable and adapter are designed for a maximum of 2 amps of power, but the resistor will allow fast-charging devices to try to draw more power than a power source may allow. This could result in damage to the power source (third-party charger, USB port, etc.) if the device and power source do not have an internal mechanism to self-regulate the amount of power flowing to or from them," he explains.
For those who have purchased these products via their website for use with smartphones other than OnePlus 2, OnePlus is going to offer an opportunity to apply for a refund. It should be noted that the cables included in the box with OnePlus 2 are not eligible for a refund, as they are said to be safe to use with the OnePlus 2.
Earlier this month, Benson Leung, a Google engineer, says that OnePlus Type-C adapter may damage your devices because of potential fault. In a Google+ post he had said that one shouldn’t buy the cheap Onelus USB Type-C adapter for Chromebook Pixel as well as Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X because it uses the wrong identifier resistor. he had added that ‘none of the ones presently available are spec compliant’ and Google is working with several vendors who are repairing their broken cables and adapters and will keep users posted as soon as the first one is available.
