Looks like Mozilla’s decision to appoint Brendan Eich as the CEO has really backfired as more and more sites have joined the boycott of one of the most popular browsers in the world.
OKCupid
, one of the world’s leading dating sites, now tells users who log in using Mozilla Firefox to change their browser and makes its disapproval of Eich’s appointment very clear in the note that greets users on the site. [caption id=“attachment_220866” align=“alignnone” width=“640”]
OKCupid’s note greeting Firefox users[/caption] At the end of the note, OKCupid gives users the option to get another browser such as Chrome, IE or Opera if they want to support the site’s cause. “If individuals like Mr. Eich had their way, then roughly 8% of the relationships we’ve worked so hard to bring about would be illegal,” the site said.
As seen last week
, the calls for Eich to step down have come from many corners. While prominent developers for Mozilla’s Firefox browser and the mobile OS pulled their apps from the respective stores, the biggest protest came from Mozilla employees who urged Eich to step down. The furore is due to a revelation that in 2008, Eich donated money to California’s Proposition 8, a ballot that sought to ban gay marriage in the state. He is also known to have donated money to a California Congressman who supported the bill. Both the Mozilla Foundation and Eich have clearly said they will be increasing their efforts for LGBT outreach. Eich said on his personal blog, “I know there are concerns about my commitment to fostering equality and welcome for LGBT individuals at Mozilla. I hope to lay those concerns to rest, first by making a set of commitments to you. More important, I want to lay them to rest by actions and results.” He
then went on to outline what employees and those associated with Mozilla can expect
. Mozilla Foundation also released a press statement on diversity at the workplace. “Mozilla has always been deeply committed to honoring diversity in sexual orientation and beliefs within our staff and community, across all the project’s activities. One concrete example of this is in our health benefit policies. Mozilla provides the same level of benefits and advantages to domestic partners as we do to married couples across the United States, even in states where it is not mandated,”
