The official app for image hosting website Imgur (pronounced “im-ij-er”) is now available on the Google Play Store. The app was initially made available in April, but it was geo-restricted to Australia, the UK and Canada at the time. However, it is now available for everyone to download.
Note that the app is still in the beta phase of development, so it might be a little buggy or slow. Overall, it’s a pretty good app and makes browsing Imgur a breeze.
Finally available to the rest of the world
The app doesn’t follow Google’s Holo guidelines and has a theme similar to that of the full-fledged website. The main homepage is just like the one on the website; all the images are arranged in neat tiles. Browsing through the images is easy; all you have to do is swipe left or right. For a better view of an image, just tap on it. Sharing images is straightforward; you only have to tap on the three-dot menu icon beneath the image to get the image’s link.
However, you don’t have an option to open image links you might come across in other apps. For instance, if you receive a link to an image hosted on Imgur in Google Hangouts, you don’t get an option to open the link in the Imgur app.
The app also lets you upload images—you can choose an image on your device, take a photo with the camera, or simply paste a link to an image. Imgur will then upload your file and give you a direct link to it, which you can then share.
You can also log-in to your account through the app. Once you’re signed-in, you’ll be able to see all the pictures you’ve uploaded, view and send messages, organise your albums and view your gallery profile and reputation points.
The settings panel lets you set the visibility for your uploaded images; you can set them as visible to everyone or only to people you give the link to. You can also set your albums to be Public, Hidden or Secret. There are also options to set how frequently you receive message notifications.
