While the world is gearing up for CES, there’s a humbler showcase of technological dexterity happening closer to home. According to The Indian Express _,_ organisers of the IIT Mumbai Techfest are showcasing the Oculus Rift, which will give students across India a chance to get their hands on the virtual reality gaming headset. As this is the first time that the headset will be showcased in India, it will give students an opportunity to get to grips with the capabilities of the Oculus Rift and help them think of innovative applications of the virtual reality headset. “This exhibition will give us an opportunity to present it to people from different institutions and think-tanks in the country, who can make efficient use of the technology for better services,” said Anuraj Gupta, media coordinator and a second year student at IIT-B to Indian Express. The Oculus Rift headset creates a 360-degree view that immerses players into fantasy settings by mount it on their heads. The company was acquired by Facebook and later upgraded the device to incorporate a higher resolution display and built-in audio. IIT Mumbai’s Techfest, which is supposed to be Asia’s largest Science and Technology festival, kick started today. This year, it expects a crowd of 135,000 people with over 2,500 Indian colleges and over 500 outside India participating in the event.
