Octa-core Xolo Play 8X-1000 with Hive custom UI launched for Rs 13,999

Indian brand Xolo has launched a new smartphone called the Xolo 8X-1000 to be available starting next week at Rs 13,999. Coming in at a time when the Xiaomi Mi 3 is clearly the phone to beat in the market, the 8X-1000 will have a hard time competing. But it does have a big differentiation factor and that’s the new customised UI.

Xolo will debut its HIVE proprietary user interface platform on the phone and like many of its counterparts, it runs on Android. Hive features customisable UI elements including custom themes, a new core launcher, new widgets, new look and features for system apps such as the music player and the camera.

It also has the ability to connect with Xolo's software development team to offer feedback on how things work. It’s very much like Xiaomi’s Mi UI, and has a brighter look overall than the stock UI. Whether it’s any better at getting you to your apps is another question and one that can only be answered after we have the device with us.

Vishal Sehgal, co-founder & director of Lava said at the special launch event, that Hive has been built to give users a differentiated experience in the UI from rivals. "Built on an Android core, HIVE is a "Made in India, Made for India" platform designed by our Software Design Centre at Bangalore."

Cutomised toggles and MiUI like volume notification

In terms of specs, Xolo 8X-1000 sports a 5-inch 720p display with Asahi Dragontrail glass protection. The phone features a glass back which has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Below the new HIVE UI, the phone has a Android 4.4 KitKat base. No word on future support for updates.  Xolo 8X-1000 is powered by a 1.4GHz MediaTek MT6592M octa-core processor and features 2GB RAM.

Internal memory is a great 16GB and there’s expandable storage too. The phone sports an 8MP rear camera featuring Sony’s Exmor R sensor and a 2MP selfie camera. In terms of connectivity, the phone supports Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and Wi-Fi Direct. What could be disappointing is the 1920mAh battery, which sounds rather measly given that big display and the octa-core processor.
