After having been funded for Project Eternity, developer Obsidian has been quietly working on the game. The company has released a new screenshot of the game that looks remarkably like some of the earlier concept art that the company had showcased during the Kickstarter campaign. Obsidian’s Art Director Rob Nessler posted the image on the Obsidian forums and asked, “We think it looks pretty good. Thoughts?”
The screenshot shows a dimly-lit circular room with some kind of glowing object in the middle. It is worth noting that the studio has earlier stated that the art in the game will be made with hand. Typically, in games like these, artists create a set of tiles which then get repeated throughout levels. Obsidian hopes to avoid that by having all of its art assets made by hand.
Looks a lot like Baldur’s Gate, doesn’t it?
The screenshot is reminiscent of older RPGs that had a similar isometric perspective. It could easily remind one of either the classic Baldur’s Gate games or even Planescape: Torment. This is presumably because a lot of the team of the studios responsible for those games, namely Black Isle, later got together to form Obsidian.
Back in October last year, Project Eternity managed to be one of the most funded games on Kickstarter. The game raised around $3.4 million on Kickstarter, and over $100,000 through PayPal. Project Eternity has surpassed all the other big games that were funded through Kickstarter, which includes titles like Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Adventure, which raised $3.3 million approximately; and Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2 that raised around $2.9 million.
