 "Nvidia’s 28nm Kepler GPU Delayed till 2012"){kind=logo}
Word on the street is that Nvidia’s next generation DX11 graphics card, codenamed Kepler, will not make its scheduled Q4 debut. Instead, it will only see the light of day in early 2012 and the reason is unsatisfactory yields from TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation). The fabrication plant has been churning out silicon for Nvidia for some time now, but their new 28nm chips don’t seem to be performing as expected.
Next-gen GPUs delayed…again
Originally, TSMC was to have the 28nm chips ready by late 2011, and begin a pilot production for 20nm chips in Q3 2012. However, this will have to be delayed. Their other major client, Qualcomm is all set to launch three new products based on the 28nm fab process – 8960, 8270 and 8260A, all based on a dual-core krait architecture.
AMD seems to be still on track with their Southern Islands GPU, as well as second generation Fusion APUs, Krishna and Wichita that will go on to replace Ontario and Zacate next year. Coming back to Nvidia’s woes, we say take all the time you need to sort out your problems, we certainly don’t want another Fermi fiasco.
