After Microsoft cut 18,000 jobs for the next year, several Nokia offerings were axed including Nokia X, Asha and the S40 phones. Thankfully, things could be looking up for one of its popular services MixRadio, which could soon be spun out of Microsoft and come to other platforms

MixRadio boss Jyrki Rosenberg told Music Ally in an interview that it’s planning a spin-off after Microsoft announced wide cuts in the organisation. “Microsoft is going to focus on developing and maintaining the best operating system for consumers to use music and entertainment with their choice of third-party applications,” he added.

MixRadio is a music library that lets users download, share and transfer their favourite music for free. MixRadio was available as a free service to make it an attractive selling point for Nokia Lumia phones rather than market the music on its own. Previously restricted to just Lumia phones, it could now reach out to other platforms too, if it launches as a standalone service. MixRadio will continue to come pre-loaded in phones running on the Windows Phone platform, though.

In his interview with Music Ally, Rosenberg declined to give specific details on how MixRadio’s service might evolve after its separation from the software giant. He said that its current focus is personal radio, mixes (playlists) curated by its in-house team of “mixologists”, which can be streamed and/or cached on users’ devices. It’s unknown whether it will continue to stay as an ad-free app, now that it’s independent.
