Nokia to shut down Ovi Share on May 30

Nokia plans to bring its Ovi Share services to a halt by the end of summer, this year. The Ovi Share service enabled Nokia users to upload as well as share files, such as photos and videos. The online service will be discontinued from May 30, 2012. This decision comes by as a result of Nokia’s plans to focus on mobile and location-based services. Although Nokia Share will shut down, Nokia Share users can retain the user name and password for other Nokia services.

Goodbye Ovi Share

Goodbye Ovi Share

This is a matter of concern to those who have files stored in Nokia Share accounts without a backup copy anywhere else. Those users will have to download the files from Nokia Share and store them somewhere else. Although this Nokia sharing service shuts by the end of May, users will not be able to upload any file to the account, starting March 13. Nevertheless, those who have a copy of the stored files, elsewhere don’t have to worry. To get detailed instructions on how to go about downloading saving the files on your computer, click here. Nokia also encourages users to opt for one of the several online sharing services, which let users share photos and videos.

There has been a lot of conundrum over Nokia’s location services, last year. Nokia had launched its exclusive Nokia Drive, a turn-by-turn GPS feature, which was hacked to run on other Windows phones and was also rumoured to hit Windows Marketplace. In fact, even Nokia Maps was hacked to work on other Windows Phones. Later on, Nokia confirmed that Nokia Drive would be exclusive to its Lumia devices and not available as an app for Windows Phone. The company has been truly focusing on location services. Early this year, reports claimed that Bing Maps will be known as Nokia Maps, while last year, Nokia Maps were made available for Android and iOS users.
