Nokia Store clocks 2 billion app downloads in India

Even as Android and iOS fight to be the number one operating system in the world, Nokia’s App Store is slowly and steadily catering to a big chunk of audience here in India. The Finnish giant has announced that the Store has marked 2 billion app downloads in India.

The Nokia Store comes pre-loaded on S40, Asha and Symbian lines of phones from Nokia’s stable. The Store, on the line of Google Play and App Store, has seen 10 billion cumulative downloads the world over. In India alone, 80 million apps are downloaded from the Store on a monthly basis.

Nokia also mentioned that apps developed by about 168 Indian developers have passed one million downloads each on Nokia’s Store. Out of the 2 billion applications downloaded in India, 1 billion of them are for the S40 and Asha platforms. S40 is Nokia’s OS for mid-budget line of phones and Asha devices like Nokia Asha 303 and Nokia Asha 311.

There are no surprises as far as the number one category for download goes – the list is dominated by Action games. Adventure and sports-based games follow closely behind at number two and three. Apps related to entertainment, including videos and movies came in at number four.

While Asha devices are still holding up Nokia’s fort for now, the company seems to be doing a lot well with selling Windows Phone devices. Ideally, the low and mid-budget Asha phones should have been the driving force behind Nokia’s sales – especially in the growing market of India – but it seems to have lost the formula that managed to make the company the king of mobile phones years ago.

In the second quarter of 2013 alone, Nokia Asha’s sales fell to 4.2 million from 5 million in the previous quarter. Despite this, managing 10 billion app downloads on a global scale is not exactly a mean feat. Let’s hope the Finnish company can keep the numbers up somehow.
