Nokia rumoured to announce Lumia 800 and 710 in India today (Updated)

Updated: Nokia has officially announced their Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 phones for the Indian market. Pricing for both the handsets hasn’t been disclosed yet but they are expected to be launched in mid-December, just in time for the Christmas rush and prices will be revealed then.

The Lumia devices will come with Nokia Maps and Drive, which is a personal navigation device (PND) with free, turn-by-turn voice guided navigation in 50 languages including Hindi as well as a dedicated in-car user-interface. Maps for 100 countries and 750 cities in India will be available on the Windows Phone Marketplace free to download on all Nokia Lumia devices. Additionally, the Nokia Lumia 710 will come with interchangeable back covers. The Lumia phones will also have Nokia Music along with the MixRadio app which is a free, global, mobile music-streaming application. These services will be available in India in the first half of 2012

The Nokia Lumia smartphones also come with several other apps preloaded. One of them is ContactsTransfer, which allows phonebook transfer from any other device/platform. There’s also an application called App Highlights, which showcases top apps and is integrated seamlessly with the online Windows Phone Marketplace. The Windows Phone Marketplace will have close to 750 locally relevant apps created by Indian partners when the Nokia Lumia hits the shelves in India.

Nokia’s Lumia series of WP7 devices have been the talk of the town in mobile world for awhile now. It’s expected that these new smartphones could literally and single handedly pull the Finnish company out of the mire from where it has been slowly settling in. Recently, in an effort to further promote the new Nokia, Microsoft tie up and the forthcoming launch of their Lumia 800 WP7 handset, Nokia showcased an interesting video on the design concept of the handset. The latest ‘word on the street’ is that the Lumia 800 and the funky looking Lumia 710 just might be announced in India today.

The smartphone wars are heating up and with one of India’s favorite brands return to form in a new avatar, perhaps Nokia just might be able to redeem itself.

Here’s a quick look at the Lumia 710 that will feature a 1.4GHz processor with 3D graphics and be available running the WP7 Mango version of the OS -

3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution under Gorilla glass

The price tags are obviously not “visible” at the moment, so there’s no telling as to how they’ll be placed. If we were to guess, we’d put the 800 somewhere in the vicinity of Rs.24,000 to Rs.26,000 (MRP) and the Lumia 710 at about Rs.20,000. Windows phone handsets seem to be rather reasonably priced as Sumsung’s recent debut, the Omnia W launched with a price of just Rs.19,990 and it features a 1.4GHz processor. However, HTC’s Radar came through at Rs.23,000 with slightly lower specs than its competition, but is still priced better than some Android smartphones.

Nothing has been confimed yet, but stay tuned to this space for more updates.
