Nokia’s Lumia series already comes with a hovering gesture activation feature courtesy the Amber update for Windows Phones. A quick patent search on Espacenet has now revealed that the company may also be planning to integrate touchless interaction with its line-up of devices.
The new patents procured by the Finnish company now show that it has two new ways for users to interact with their phones without touching it. While the hovering gesture will just wake up the display when users point their fingers close to the same, the new patents will apparently make reading and typing easier by just hovering over the screen. These features, from what can be seen, may be integrated to the company’s Lumia line-up soon.

The first patent deals with “Hover based text/object enlargement while reading or UI interaction”. This basically means that users will be able to enlarge the letter or part of the word is hovering over. This will make it easier for users to render touch inputs. The other patent on the list, “hover base handling of text input and icons” will lets users enter the zoom-pan mode while hovering on the input text. The part of the text that is being hovered over will be zoomed into. And users can also simultaneously pan across the rest of the sentence in zoom made based on the movement of their hands.
If these new patents are any indication, it definitely looks like Nokia is planning to get Hover based interaction to its Lumia devices in a big way. Currently, the Hover based wake up option on its line-up only allows users to see the glance screen once the device is woken up. With more touchless interaction seemingly in the pipeline, it definitely looks like the Finnish company wants users to be able to do a lot without touching their devices.
