Nokia N95 to be Announced Today

Nokia is all set to announce their latest and greatest in the N-Series, the N95 multimedia computer! Yep, they’re not calling it a phone anymore, they say, “It is what computers have become.” But I’ll still call it a phone, alright?

The N95 has more features than any other phone on the market (other than some of those Korean ones). Network wise, this phone is 3.5G HSDPA support along with WCDMA/3G/UMTS and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE compliant, it has a built-in GPS receiver, WiFi, uPnP, Bluetooth (complete with 2.0 EDR and A2DP support), IrDA and USB 2.0 connectivity. This phone also comes with SIP support for VoIP!

The N95 is a Smartphone running Nokia’s SymbianOS 9.3 Series 60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, which includes the open source Nokia web browser version 2.0, Flash Lite 2.0 and Firmware over the air updates (FOTA).

Multimedia wise, the N95 has standard MP3/AAC/WMA playback, FM radio tuner, a 3.5mm stereo jack, ‘3D stereo’ speakers, TV output capability, 2.6-inch QVGA (240x320) resolution display, a 5 megapixel mother of a digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics, auto-focus DVD-quality video recording, between 150mb to 160mb of internal memory, 64mb of RAM and a microSD expansion slot. (shocked face emoticon).

The phone features a ‘double slide’ design, in which the keypad slides out from under the phone, like the N80, and the multimedia controls (play, pause etc.) slide out from the top of the phone. I think it would have been better to put the media keys on the side of the phone like Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, which are not only more convenient to use, but also easier to produce (lesser moving parts). Though it does seem convenient to use when using it sideways like a portable media player. But even after all these omni-sliding mechanics, the phone manages to be decently small at around 10cm high, 5.3cm wide and 2cm thick. The weight also seems controlled at around 120gm. A ‘huge’ improvement over the N91’s ergonomics!

This phone was also rumoured to be announced as the N83, which can be attributed to the fact that this is a slider like the N80 series, and the N90 series have been mainly clamshells, other than then candy bar N91.

The price of this new Nokia N95 is expected to be around 550 GBP (around Rs 48,000), which would make it the most expensive phone in India, not counting the Vertu Constellation.
