Nokia Here Maps app now available on iOS devices

Earlier this month, Nokia had rebranded its Nokia Drive maps suite to Nokia Here. The company had also said that it is making the service available to Android and iOS devices. Now, the iOS app for Nokia Here is available for free on the App Store.

Some of the major features of the app include the ability to pick the map you need from map view, live traffic view, public transport line view, or satellite view. Another feature is the ability to save maps to use offline. The app is also integrated with Nokia Here’s community-based features, such as the ability to access community maps created and updated by users.

Another major feature making its way into the iOS app is Collections, which allows you to store locations in collections, which can then be accessed with your Nokia Account or Facebook login. This will allow you to access your Collections anywhere.

The app also features step-by-step voice-guided navigation for walking through pedestrian routes, parks, and alleyways, along with details on public transportation and driving directions.

Nokia had rebranded its mapping service last week, and had announced new features such as Collections and 3D maps. 3D maps lets you get a 3D view of key locations around the world. Comparisons can be drawn with Apple’s own 3D maps service, called Flyover, as the provider of the data is the same for both the services – C3 Technologies.

The maps editor lets users update street names and traffic information. The information will then be available to other users of the mapping service.

Nokia may also soon be able to kick off its own version of Street View, as it has acquired Earthmine, the mapping company which brings street view functionality to Nokia’s maps.

While the iOS app is now out, Nokia has also promised an Android version of the app. Nokia will be providing the maps SDK to OEMs of Android devices so as to offer better integration of apps with Nokia Here.

Nokia Here can be tried out on your web browser here, and here is the App Store link for the iOS app.

Earlier this month, before the name change, Nokia had announced that its mapping services are  available to other makers of Windows Phone 8 devices. The inclusion of Nokia Drive in devices could be optional for manufacturers. Also, there is no information on whether a free version of Nokia Drive will be making its way to the Windows Phone Store.

Nokia had earlier announced in a blog post that it will make Nokia Drive available to all Windows Phone 8 manufacturers. The post said, “Nokia’s Location platform will be central to the Windows Phone 8 experience, with the intention of developing smartphones that bring advanced location experiences. Windows Phone 8 partners and developers will be able to use our location assets to build location-based apps and experiences of superior quality.”

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
