Nokia 'fakes' PureView tech in new Lumia 920 ad

Nokia Lumia launched its flagship device the Lumia 920 yesterday in New York. The new device which runs on Microsoft’s latest Windows 8 OS, is being touted by the company as a viable new option against the army of Android and iOS devices that are ruling the smartphone market.

During the event, Nokia’s executives keenly emphasised on the Lumia 920’s Pureview Camera, with its Floating lens capability to ensure image stabilization. The Lumia 920 comes with an 8 megapixel camera with a PureView branding, like the PureView 808 and offers some fantastic images for users.

Nokia’s site reads, PureView camera techology with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and a Carl Zeiss lens means your pictures and videos are detailed, blur-free and bright, no matter what light conditions you’re in. No other cameraphone even comes close.

But in the latest Lumia 920 ad, Nokia appears to have committed a major gaffe. The error was first noticed by The Verge, who pointed out that as the girl rides on her bike while the boy takes her picture with OIS on from his Lumia 920, you can see

a big white van with a lighting rig and a cameraman standing in the doorway - with what appears to be a large camera rig. Whatever he’s holding, we can reasonably agree it’s not a Lumia 920.

When you stop the ad at 27 seconds, you can clearly see the guy in the van holding the camera. Basically Nokia’s been busted pretty badly. So much for imagestabilization on the Lumia 920. The company has also posted an update on its blog, saying that

The Lumia 920 pictures in this post were taken using prototype hardware and software, and then reduced dramatically in size. In addition, the OIS video, above, was not shot using the Lumia 920.

The company then issue a full blown apology after The Verge pointed out the errors.

We’re excited about the Lumia 920 and the ground-breaking PureView imaging capabilities we announced today.

In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created.
