Nokia has launched a new handset priced at Rs 2,579 with Urdu language support in India. The new Nokia 114 has been launched keeping in mind the 150 million Urdu speaking populace in the country. Users can make use of all the basic services in the phone like messaging and Internet access in Urdu. Nokia’s phones in some west Asian countries and Pakistan already come with Urdu capability, and company has now customised the same for Indian users. Nokia currently supports content and user interface in 11 different Indian languages.
Let’s have a look at the specifications of the phone. The Nokia 114 is an entry level dual-SIM phone with a 1.8-inch QVGA display. Some of its features include a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) rear camera, 32GB of expandable storage as well as a 1020 mAh battery. The phone measures 10 x 46 x 14.8 mm and will barely weigh your pocket down with a weight rating of 80 grams.
Entry-level Nokia phone with Urdu language support
According to a report by Business Standard, P Balaji, Managing Director, Nokia India revealed that the company was prompted to launch the product on a special request by Minister of Communications and Information technology Kapil Sibal. The company is expected to target states with a higher Urdu-speaking population like Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is being set up to avoid barriers in digital content due to content unavailability in local languages.
Kapil Sibal, who was present at the event, added that there are several initiatives running from the Ministry of Communications and IT to extend the usage of the language for the Internet. The government recently announced that it will distribute 25 million phones at a subsidised price as well as nine million tablets for free to students in rural areas.
