No YouTube app in beta 4 of Apple's iOS 6

It seems that Apple is doing its best to distance itself from Google. After unveiling the 3D Maps application for iOS 6 without the Google backend, Apple has removed the native YouTube application from the latest beta of iOS 6, reports  9to5Mac. The app had been on the iPhone since the app was first launched in 2007.

Shortly after 9to5Mac reported the app gone missing, Apple informed The Verge, “Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store”.

The report by The Verge states, “We just received a statement from Google in which the company reiterated its commitment to offering a YouTube app on the iOS platform. A YouTube spokesperson said that “we are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users” — a statement that reinforces our suspicion that the app will likely be updated a lot more frequently now that it isn’t so tightly woven into Apple’s OS”.

This does not necessarily have to mean bad news to iOS users as Apple’s Safari browser supports playback of other video streaming sites easily. Also, if Google is working on a dedicated application for iOS devices, the video viewing experience may not be lost, and may even improve as The Verge has indicated.

Another major news update about the latest version of iOS 6 is that it will have a Wi-Fi Plus Cellular feature. With this new feature located in the Cellular settings of an iOS device such as an iPad or an iPhone, a user will have the option to easily switch over to a cellular connection if they are out of the reach of a Wi-Fi connection. This can be very convenient if the Wi-Fi signal is lost while Safari is running; the user can easily continue browsing without losing connectivity.

An interesting feature of iOS 6 that was not given the spotlight at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote is that it will have an Auto Layout feature. This feature will allow app developers to apply constraints that define the way the elements of the user interface are displayed on-screen. These elements can be moved depending on a prioritized list of rules. The Auto Layout feature will be especially beneficial if Apple does launch an iPhone with a larger display or an iPad with a smaller one. This should reduce the issue of fragmentation, which the brand has avoided so far.
