Internet social networks like ‘MySpace' have apparently become a hunting ground for pedophiles and the like. Sites like Neopets, Flickr, AIM, YouTube, Yahoo! Groups, Blogger, Odeo, Slashdot are now under scrutiny after a bill was proposed last month, for a ban on them.
A Republican legislator from Bucks County proposed a bill in the US, claiming that these sites are dangerous for teenagers who may be lured into meeting child ‘predators'. They find it easy to contact children and teenagers through chat rooms and contact lists on these sites.
Access to sites like these in schools and libraries is another issue of concern for the legislator. Until now, only 15 members of the house have signed the ‘Deleting Online Predators Act'. The bill, if approved will block access to many chat rooms and forums on the Internet. The proposal came after media reports in the US about a sting operation through MySpace where four men were caught trying to victimize a 13 year old girl in Long Island,NY.
