Nintendo has just announced that it will be killing off support for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, its online multiplayer service for the DS and Wii. Many online features will now be disabled by Nintendo permanently. Wi-Fi Connection will be shutting down on May 20, effectively meaning that only Nintendo’s offline features will work. Features like online play, matchmaking and leaderboards will be switched off by Nintendo. The statement announcing this move was first published by Nintendo of Japan and further confirmed by Nintendo of Australia and America. Wii games including Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Pokémon Battle Revolution will not be compatible for online use anymore. Wii Ware games like Dr Mario & Gem Buster, WarioWare: Do it Yourself-Showcase will be affected too. Wii Speak service is going to be switched off too. For the entire list of games that will be affected, head to Nintendo’s support page. Services that will not be affected by this online shut down are the Internet Channel, the Nintendo DS Browser, the DSi Browser, the DSi Shop, the Wi-Fi connection Pay & Play, the Wii Shop Channel and YouTube. Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will remain unaffected but you will not be able to use online features of Wii software played in Wii Mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games played on Nintendo 3DS systems.
