Cross platform messaging app makers Nimbuzz today announced that it had breached the 150 million user mark in over 200 countries worldwide. The company revealed that more than 60 percent of the 150 million strong user base lies in Asia.

An elated Nimbuzz released these figures, announcing a 100 percent year-over-year growth of the app. The messaging platform hit 50 million in August 2011 and 100 million in 2012, thereby doubling the size of its user base every year. Nimbuzz’s presence is the strongest in Asia, with India and Saudi Arabia being the two countries with the highest number of Nimbuzz users.

Asia and the Middle East sport a figure of 78 million Nimbuzz users, followed by Africa with 16 million users, Europe with 10 million and USA with 9 million users. Nimbuzz supports over 5,000 devices across various platforms and is one of the few free messaging apps that have been designed for Java apps running feature phones. This feature of Nimbuzz is probably responsible for such steep numbers in countries like India and Saudi Arabia, where most people still find feature phones more affordable as compared to smartphones.

The popularity of this app is so much that Nielsen India believes that Nimbuzz could actually be giving Facebook’s messenger nightmares as far as user base is concerned. Nielsen even ranked the cross platform messaging app ahead of Facebook Messenger, YouTube and Gmail amongst others.

Available on all major platforms like BlackBerry, Android, iOS and Windows Phone, Nimbuzz also supports J2ME, Windows and Mac Computers. The app comes pre-loaded onto pretty much all local OEM handsets in the country apart from Nokia, Samsung and LG. India is huge on Nimbuzz’s radar with the company building an India office in 2008 and going on to become synonymous with free messaging in India, facing tough competition only from WhatsApp. CEO Vikas Saxena claims that Nimbuzz’s appeal to users lies in the fact that it is a “single platform capable of handling immense amounts of data for little or no cost at all.”

The company recently released a redesigned app for the BlackBerry 10 platform, which provides free picture and video messaging, file sharing and chat. The app in its new avatar integrates GTalk, Yahoo and Facebook Messenger in a BlackBerry app, enabling users to send messages, pictures and videos across to any mobile device. Nimbuzz said that it aimed to provide BlackBerry 10 devices including the PlayBook access to its features.

For BlackBerry 10 devices, Group and "Peer-to-Peer" messaging are set to be important features that create free chat rooms for friends to use. It also allows multimedia sharing using the app, thereby cutting down data costs and making it cheap and affordable to send across images and videos to friends and family.

Nimbuzz also allows BlackBerry users to post directly to Facebook and Twitter through its social integration, without even needing to leave the app. What’s more, the app allows BlackBerry 10 users to access the N-World, Nimbuzz’ own entertainment-focused international marketplace.

BlackBerry had selected Nimbuzz as a pre-launch recipient of its new SDK, providing the app makers with advanced tools and resources to build a special version of Nimbuzz that will work across all BlackBerry 10 devices, including an expedited review process from BlackBerry World.
