Nexus line here to stay, confirms Google top exec Dave Burke

Google won't be killing on the Nexus line of devices, according to a report.

Google won't be killing on the Nexus line of devices any time soon, according to a report in ReadWrite.

Earlier we had seen several reports that Google was planning to ditch the Nexus line for a more premium, 'Silver' range of devices. Accurate tipster Evleaks had revealed that Google will not be releasing a Nexus 6 this year and that users should not worry as there’s a ‘silver’ lining to this cloud at Android Silver.

But according to Google's Dave Burke, the head of Android engineering and the Nexus programme at Google that the company plans to keep building Nexus phones. He told Read Write in an interview that, "We are still invested in Nexus. People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make."

Burke also said that Google was not commenting on Android Silver right now. He further explained, "You can’t build a platform in the abstract, you have to build a device (or devices). And then, I think Nexus is also interesting in that it is a way of us explaining how we think Android should run. It is a statement, almost a statement of purity in some respects. I don’t see why we would ever turn away from that..."

So its still possible that we could get a Nexus 6 or other Nexus devices and an Android Silver smartphones as well, this year.  More recently rumour of Google working with HTC on a new long-rumoured 8.9-inch tablet codenamed Volantis or Flounder, and internally referred to as Nexus 9.

The report said Volantis would sport a 8.9-inch display with 2048 x 1440 pixels of resolution, with pixel density up to 281pp. It is expected to be powered by Nvidia Logan 64-bit processor, better known as Tegra K1, coupled with 2GB RAM.  The specs sheet also includes 16/32GB storage, 8MP OIS main camera, 3MP front facing camera, aluminium zero-gap construction and stereo front-facing speakers.
