Next version of Apple OS X could be titled Lynx

The next version of Apple’s Mac operating system, which is expected to be the OS X 10.9, may be titled Lynx. This shows that the company is still naming software for its line-up of computers after big cats.

According to a report by Apple Scoop, the website states, “This report comes from a reliable source who claims to have talked to someone from inside the walls of Apple.  This source claimed that he saw some internal papers that seem to be finalizing the name of the operating system, although the same source couldn’t say when Apple would be finalizing its name and announcing it to the public.

There is no information about the date of launch of the operating system. One could expect Apple to announce it at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event in 2013.

In 2003, Apple had trademarked a range of names such as Lynx, Cougar, Leopard, and Tiger. The brand has already used Leopard and Tiger as names for its previous Mac operating systems, which leaves Cougar and Lynx up for grabs.

As of now, the OS version being named Lynx remains a huge rumour, and more should be known in the coming months.

The current operating system for Apple computers is OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. It was announced at the WWDC event held earlier this year. This version, which is the ninth release of the OS, is available in the market for $19.99, and has a range of features that bridge the gap between the Mac operating system and iOS. Within a week of its release, Apple announced that OS X Mountain Lion has been downloaded more than three million times, making it the most successful OS X release.

Some of the Mountain Lion features are:

  • It claims to offer better integration with social networks such as Facebook. It will also come with built-in features to allow sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and other services. For instance, you’ll get notifications when you get a message or a mention in a Facebook or Twitter post. You need to sign in only once, and you can share directly from other apps you are using.
  • Power Nap ensures that Mac gets updated even while it’s in power-saving ‘sleep’ mode. It will get your email messages, back up your files and download software updates automatically. It will work with recent MacBook Air computers and the higher-end MacBook Pro model, the one with the sharper, ‘Retina’ display.
  • It comes with a new Messages app, which has been taken from Apple’s mobile operating system, will replace iChat. It will allow users to send messages to other Apple users, whether that person is on a Mac or an Apple mobile device.
  • Mountain Lion will be integrated with iCloud, the new Internet storage service designed for the mobile devices.
  • The software will bring dictation to Macs, essentially allowing the computer to type as you talk.
  • Game Center will store high game scores and help users find opponents on both Macs and Apple mobile devices.
