Sony’s had a lot on their hands in the recent past, what with the S1 and S2 tablet unveilings and teasing new entries in the VAIO lineup. Now there’s news surfacing that their PlayStation 3 lineup might be headed towards a refresh as well.
Are you the new old PS3?
Filings at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US indicate two new SKUs could be incoming, in the form of models numbered CECH-3001A and CECH-3001B. Not much is known about the new models because Sony requested that some details remain confidential, but what is clear is that they will support Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi and will have hard-disk drives. That isn’t in any way at all different from the existing PS3s, so we hope to get our hands on some more information soon.
This hardware update, if true, would be the first major one since Sony launched the PS3 Slim back in 2009. It’s not certain what changes the two new models will bring about, but one possibility is that the new systems could be more secure against hacking and Jailbreaking. Even so, Sony will hope they have the PlayStation Network up and running before the time for announcing these new models comes around.
