To treat people to a magnificent view of the “supermoon” on Monday - the brightest in nearly 70 years - the Nehru Planetarium here will set up telescopes to view the event, an official said. To be started after 8 p.m. on Monday, the event to view the biggest supermoon since 1948 will be open for people from sunset to 10 pm on Tuesday. The best time to observe the supermoon is just after dusk , when the moon will be on the horizon. At moonrise, the moon appears the largest. E Earthlings will not see another supermoon like this until 2034. The moon’s orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical so sometimes it is closer and sometimes it’s farther away. When the moon is full as it makes its closest pass to Earth it is known as a supermoon. At perigree, the point at which the moon is closest to Earth, the moon can be as much as 14 per cent closer to Earth than at apogee, when the moon is farthest from our planet. The full moon appears that much larger in diameter and because it is larger shines 30 percent more moonlight onto the Earth, according to NASA. This supermoon is the second in a series of three supermoons near the year end of 2016. The next supermoon will be on December 14. With inputs from IANS
