MTNL, Pune Traffic Police websites hacked and defaced by Pakistani hacker

MTNL’s Mumbai website faced a pre-Independence Day crisis of its own as it has been allegedly hacked into by a Pakistani hacker. On August 14, MTNL Mumbai’s homepage was replaced by a message that read “Happy Independence Day Pakistan”.

The hack took place a day prior to the Indian Independence Day – which coincidentally is the day Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day – and was conducted allegedly by a Pakistani hacker who lives in Sydney, Australia. The page was defaced by a “Mr Creepy” and he even left a link to his Facebook profile. The profile – which is pretty much open to the public – showed that “Mr. Creepy” has even developed an application called the Swati SMS Bomber that allows you to send a large number of text messages in a short period of time. We’re not sure linking his Facebook profile to a hacked page was the smartest move Mr. Creepy could have made.

Though the defaced page seems to have been taken down by authorities, , the website is still inaccessible. The hacker has also broken into a couple of Pune based websites – the Pune Traffic Police website and Janwani.org , a website that addresses the development of the city. Both the websites are still defaced with the same post hosted on the homepage.

MTNL’s Mumbai website seems to be the favourite haunt for any kind of protest or hacking thanks to the lax security system the site seems to be employing. Last year in June, Anonymous’ Indian arm had taken down the Internet service provider’s website as a protest against its blocking of torrent and other P2P sharing websites.

Intrigued by all things social, Nishtha will invariably tweet about you. When not tweeting or writing about the next viral video, you will hear her proclaiming her love to Metallica, James Hetfield, Opeth, Akerfeldt and all bands that go 'growl'. She also obsesses about ACP Pradyuman and South Park and you will always find her moving around with a book. Her focus is on all the happening stuff in the tech domain, and she won't hesitate to take a shot at some of the oddball devices that make their way to our labs.
