The 2014 Lok Sabha elections results day was always going to break some records when it comes to online chatter. Facebook and Twitter have been at the forefront of these Lok Sabha elections unlike any other time and obviously a lot of the candidates and most parties have a presence there. Aam Aadmi Party famously won the Twitter bragging rights during last year’s Delhi assembly polls, where the social network was used to reach out to voters and spread the message. It resulted in the party coming to power, albeit for a very short term. So there’s no doubt that Twitter and Facebook are powerful tools in the elections scheme of things. Today, Twitter’s trending topics in India were dominated by the Indian elections. Narendra Modi and his BJP party had the bulk of the trending hashtags, with terms such as TsuNaMo and Mission 272 trending. This was expected after the huge margin of victory for the BJP in these polls. Worldwide, the trending hashtags were less partisan with #Results2014 and #IndiaDecides2014 making the top ten list. These two hashtags were the leading trends in India too. In neighbouring Pakistan too the Indian elections dominated the non-promoted list, with #JudgementDayonNewsX trending top of the list.
Facebook released stats of the number of interactions on the site ever since the polling dates were announced. Since the first week of March, the site saw **more than 220 million interactions** in the form of posts, comments, likes and photos, with more than 29 million of the active users in India participating in these.
