EA has finally announced the long-awaited sequel to its cult-classic first-person parkour game—Mirror's Edge 2. Alongside the announcement, EA has also released a trailer, which the company claims is completely done with the in-game engine. Check it out:
The trailer doesn't show much in the way of gameplay, but it does show us what the graphics will look like. The game seems to follow the same minimalistic aesthetics as the original, with most of the environments being coated in bright colours. The trailer also shows the combat, which seems to have been improved from the original.
Fans nearly jumped out of their seats when EA showed the trailer off, since the first game was originally released five years ago—back in 2008. It looked like EA had since abandoned the franchise. Mirror’s Edge made waves in its fan base for the unique first-person Parkour based gameplay. While it did not make much of an impact as a commercial success, many fans have been praying for a sequel to the game.
Faith is returning for the sequel
It's hard to say nobody saw the announcement coming, however, since Mirror's Edge 2 had been heavily hinted at thanks to a couple of listings on some of Amazon's websites back in May. It also helped that a support page for Mirror's Edge 2 was spotted on EA's website. The page wasn't directly accessible at the time and you'd have to manually enter the URL to get to it.
EA Labels President Frank Gibeau had earlier indicated that Mirror’s Edge 2 could be seen running on DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, but times have since changed and the game is more likely to be using the updated Frostbite 3 engine.
