Microsoft's Surface phone might finally arrive in 2017

Microsoft's long-rumoured Surface Phone might finally be coming in late 2016 or early 2017

Microsoft seems to be allegedly working on a Surface Phone which is expected to come out in 2017 according to a report in Windows Central. The site states that there would be not one, but three different variants of the Surface Phone.

The report goes on to state that the Surface Phones will not be released till sometime in 2017. There would be three Surface Phones targetting three different user groups - consumers, business users and enthusiasts. There are no details about the specifications of any of the three Surface Phones and the pricing will certainly be addressing the higher end segment considering Surface Pro and Surface Book products have been traditionally targetted at the high end segment.

There hasn't been much excitement about Microsoft's Lumia 950/950XL line of phones and Microsoft has recently released its Lumia 650 for the Indian market. The Windows 10 Mobile OS is still under development and two major updates are expected in the near future - Redstone 1 which has got the name Anniversary Update and Redstone 2 which is scheduled for Spring 2017. These updates are expected to bring in a lot of polish to the Windows 10 Mobile OS.

There have been speculations regarding the future of Lumia devices as we have not seen any Lumia roadmap announcements for the future. Will Microsoft only have Surface Phones going forward? Only time will tell.

The Surface Phone will most likely be developed by the same team that has worked on the Surface Pro and Surface Book - a team headed by Panos Panay.
