Yesterday we had reported about Sony’s PS4 hoping to take over the throne from PS2 of being the ultimate gaming console with respect to sales. But sales could well exceed the current number, if Sony manages to break through in China.

Engadget reports that a month after Microsoft’s announcement of bringing its Xbox 360 to China, Sony has followed suit and announced the arrival of the PlayStation in the country.  The report is unclear about when Sony will launch the PlayStation consoles in China or which console will arrive first. The arrival of the two console giants comes after the Chinese government lifted its ban on imported video games and consoles.

Microsoft merged with China’s BesTV for its launch, while Sony will be working with a local company called Shanghai Oriental Pearl Culture Development (OPCD). The interesting bit reported by Sina Tech is that the parent company Shanghai Media Group is the same in both cases.

The Sony-OPCD merger will see Sony managing the manufacturing and sales of the hardware, and the other heading the service, sales, licensing, distribution and R&D efforts.

The joint-venture emphasizes on the introduction of healthy games that adhere to Chinese laws, national conditions and the preferences of domestic players that are suitable to Chinese Government policies. So you can expect a whole lot of censored PlayStation games, ban on games which contain high levels of explicit content. There is high possibility of the consoles not being compatible with certain games released in other countries.
